GALEN UNIVERSITY was named in honor of the Greek scholar and physician, Galen, who lived from 130-220 A.D. Galen studied philosophy, mathematics, and logic in his youth. He subsequently began, and completed, his medical training. Galen traveled extensively to broaden his knowledge. He studied more, and conducted research in Smyrna, Corinth and Alexandria. Through observation, dissection, and experimentation, Galen greatly expanded what was known about the anatomy and physiology of the human body. He was an excellent clinician. He was interested in therapeutic plants and their uses. Galen’s work on the structure and functioning of the human body remained the standard until the late sixteenth century.
