(3 CREDITS) This course examines the political, social, cultural, and economic factors that have shaped and are shaping modern Europe. The historical development of movements towards economic and political integration will be examined with specific reference to what is now called the European Union. Post World War II progress towards regional integration in Europe will provide a central focus, after a brief examination of the historical trends that led to integration, along with the inherent problems that have arisen. The evolving role of the European Union on the world stage will be assessed as well as its future prospects. The course will also examine the "East-West" and "North-South" relations in Europe, before turning to an analysis of the relationship between Europe and the rest of the world.
