GEOG-250 FUNDAMENTALS OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS

(3 CREDITS)

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of geographic information systems (GIS).  It discusses how a GIS is used to facilitate workflow, and data management and analysis.  It teaches fundamental GIS concepts as well as how to query a GIS database, manipulate tabular data, edit spatial and attribute data, and present data clearly and efficiently using maps, tables, and charts. It also introduces field data collection techniques using mobile devices that can be used in a variety of fields of study.  Participants learn how to use the components of ArcGIS; ArcMap™, ArcCatalog™, and the Geoprocessing Framework, along with mobile GIS, and they explore how together, these software products provide a complete GIS solutions.
