ENGL-220 ADVANCED COMPOSITION: EXPOSITORY WRITING

(3 CREDITS)
Practice in the techniques of exposition to promote effective writing by teaching students to analyze, evaluate, criticize and synthesize arguments. Students will evaluate their readings and resulting thoughts, expressing these in logical and correct academic writing. The course will also introduce students to advanced rhetorical strategies that incorporate both traditional and recent systems of reasoning. Strong emphasis is placed on critical reading and evaluation and on persuasive writing. Students will produce approximately 8,000 words of argumentative prose, all of which exhibits a clear academic voice, a logical pattern of organization, a coherent and compelling main idea, substantial effective development, a competent use of language, and a sophisticated awareness of audience. Class activities include intensive discussion of student papers. Model essays and other works are examined to study strategies of expository writing.
