*ENGL-265 SURVEY OF CARIBBEAN LITERATURE

(3 CREDITS)
The course analyzes key concepts associated with post-colonial literature of the Anglophone Caribbean, including imperialisms and the Diaspora, post-, neo- and anti-colonialism, slavery, marginality, authenticity and integration, language and representation, spirit possession and magical realism, myth, motif and the collective unconscious. Sited in Belize, formerly British Honduras and a Crown Colony, this course affords students the opportunity to analyze Caribbean literature in context. Films, documentaries, cultural exhibitions, historical archives, tours and field trips, guest speakers, interviews and village home-stays will create an awareness of the environment, cultures and languages that influence the Caribbean canon.
