ESCI-199 INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
(3 CREDITS)
The course is focused on the essence of Sustainable Development and its four dimensions: environmental, economic, social and institutional. It includes a thorough analysis of the criteria and the indicators of sustainable development and their applicability at a local, national and international level.


ESCI-375 APPLICATIONS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
(3 CREDITS)
This course provides an in-depth exploration of Sustainable Development and its role in improving the quality of life of the human population. Topics include the alternative actions, instruments and policies that are utilized in the pursuit of sustainable development; the issues and challenges of sustainability in developing countries; and current theories of sustainable development.


SOC-203 SOCIAL ISSUES IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY
(3 CREDITS)
This course is an examination of social issues facing a developing country, with Belize as the case study. Topics will include poverty, teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and gender and family issues.

 

ANTH- 215 MAYA CULTURE & ARCHEOLOGY
(3 CREDITS)
This course provides a survey of the Maya peoples and the history of Belize, through archeology, linguistics, and cultural history from pre-history to the present day. Students will be introduced to Maya architecture, art, language, and culture--experientially and through lectures and classes.


ANTH-225 MESOAMERICAN CIVILIZATIONS
(3 CREDITS)
This course will survey the prehistory of ancient Mesoamerica, with particular focus on the major aboriginal cultures of Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize (i.e. the Olmecs, Teotihuacan, Zapotecs, Maya, Aztecs, etc.). Classes and field trips will pay specific attention to the native arts, architecture, and scientific achievements. Physical anthropology, paleo-ethnography of principal native groups,the major cultural achievements and the growth of civilizations in the various regions of the area will also be discussed.


TOUR- 310 TOURISM PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
(3 CREDITS)
The student will acquire the skills necessary for an approach to planning that integrates the guidelines for sustainable tourism development which is responsive to the needs of the community.
