ANTH-100 CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY (3 CREDITS) This course introduces students to human and cultural diversity. It explores universal human issues, such as marriage and family, sex, work and play, power, identity, meaning, and death. The course's emphasis is on preliterate cultures. ANTH-109 ANTHROPOLOGY FIRST YEAR (3 CREDITS) General orientation to the Anthropology and Archaeology curricula, including general concepts, academic literature, and basic writing skills in these professions. Required of all majors. ANTH- 130 MONKEYS, APES & HUMANS (3 CREDITS) This course surveys living and fossil primates throughout the world and provides insight into the complexities of primate interactions and their unique evolutionary pathways. Topics include anatomy, social behavior, ecology, human-animal interaction, eco-tourism, and deforestation. Cross-listed as BIOL-130. ANTH-225 MESOAMERICAN CIVILIZATIONS (3 CREDITS) This course will survey the prehistory of ancient Mesoamerica, with particular focus on the major aboriginal cultures of Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize (i.e. the Olmecs, Teotihuacan, Zapotecs, Maya, Aztecs, etc.). Lectures, readings, slides, films, field trips, and discussions will cover the Pre-Columbian archaeology and culture history of Mesoamerica, with specific attention to the native arts, architecture, scientific achievements, physical anthropology and paleo-ethnography of principal Native groups. The course progresses chronologically from Paleo-Indian times to the European Conquest, with emphasis on major cultural achievements and the growth of civilizations in the various regions of the area. ANTH-475 ANTHROPOLOGY SEMINAR (3 CREDITS) Intensive examination of selected topics in anthropology. Development of skills in analysis and criticism. ANTH-480 ADVANCED FIELD ARCHAEOLOGY (3 CREDITS) Field opportunity for students who have had at least one previous archaeology field experience. The course focuses on advanced techniques and methods for site, location, exploration, and/or excavation. Some projects require extended periods of group living, and/or camping, off campus. One credit hour per week of work (usually one day off per week).
