I am excited to announce that the Wildlife Center of Virginia has made a donation of medical supplies to the Bellize Wildlife Conservation Network. Please see the list of available items at this time here. In addtion you can see a list of items that are frequently received by the Wildlife Center of Virginia (WCV) here. WCV has generously agreed to send medical supplies to support wildlife conservation and humane societies in Belize as available and needed. Within the next shipment there will be basic medical instruments (hemostats, needle holders, etc). You are encouraged to provide a wishlist of items that you see on the list of generally available items as well as other items that WCV could look out for. Please contact the administrator with any questions and send in a wishlist.
These donations are intended to assist wildlife conservation as well as humane societies. We would like to make these supplies available not only to BWCN members but also to all in-country veterinarians.
In order for you to receive donations if you are not yet a member of BWCN, we would like to ask you to simply join the Belize Wildlife Conservation Network and to agree to assist wildlife conservation when possible (eg. by allowing to be informed on legal and medical issues related to wildlife, agreeing to network, using at least part of the donated materials (>50%) on wildlife or shelter animals or donating other services in return).
The best example is X-ray film: we have received 4 boxes of X-ray film and would like to donate these to participating veterinarians who would then in turn agree to provide x-rays for injured wildlife or animals in a shelter situation free of cost. To make this clear: you are not expected to use these materials exclusively for wild animals or shelter animals but in the example of x-ray film: 50 % of the films.
Another possible assistance from participating veterinarians could be first aid (and transportation to according facilities) or euthanasia for an injured wild animal. We are working on establishing basic training material for professionals and interested individuals on how to respond to these wildlife emergencies and transportation would have to be determined on an individual basis at this time (eventually we hope to have sponsors, volunteers and a budget for transportation).
Please assist us as we establish this new exciting feature.
